Neurological Disorders Segment Held Largest Share of Post-Acute Care Market in 2022

According to our new research study on “Post-Acute Care Market Forecast to 2030 – Global Analysis – by Service Type, Age, and Disease Conditions,” the post-acute care market is expected to grow from US$ 715.19 billion in 2022 to US$ 1,186.29 billion by 2030; it is anticipated to record a CAGR of 6.5% from 2022 to 2030. The report emphasizes the trends prevalent in the global post-acute care market, along with drivers and deterrents affecting its growth.

The post-acute care market, by disease conditions, is segmented into amputations, wound management, brain and spinal cord injury, neurological diseases, and others. In 2022, the neurological disorder segment held the largest share of the market. Moreover, the same segment is expected to grow at the fastest CAGR during 2022–2030. As per a research article “Tackling the Burden of Neurological Diseases in Canada with Virtual Care During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond,” published by the National Library of Medicine in May 2020, neurological disorders affect ~10% of Canadians every year, and the percentage is expected to increase in the coming years. According to data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 5.8 million people in America suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease in 2020, and this number is projected to triple and reach 14 million by 2060. Neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), epilepsy, and seizures often lead to enhanced care, which is provided by post-acute care providers. Patients with brain and spinal cord injuries (SCIs) essentially need specialized post-acute care treatments, such as physical, occupational, and speech therapies. According to a report published by the Association for Spinal Injury Research, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (Aspire, UK), ~2,500 people are diagnosed with SCIs annually in the UK. Currently, ~50,000 people are living with SCIs in the country. According to the CDC, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) were the leading cause of death and disability in 2021; more than 69,000 TBI-related deaths were registered in 2021 in the US. According to Brain Injury Canada, TBIs are common among Canadians, which result in 18,000 hospitalizations each year, and these injuries affect 2% of the Canadian population. An upsurge in the prevalence of brain injuries and spinal cord injuries bolsters the demand for post-acute care after surgeries. The increasing number of cases of wounds is triggering healthcare costs for wound management worldwide. According to Medicare, the acute and chronic wound treatment costs range between US$ 28.1 billion and US$ 96.8 billion yearly in the US. Most of the expenses were associated with surgical wounds, followed by diabetic foot ulcers. Orthopedic injuries are common in the aging population due to biological changes ongoing in the bodies of older adults. As people grow older, their bone mineral density decreases. Thus, fractures are among the serious problems faced by the elderly. Moreover, musculoskeletal diseases are becoming a greater burden every year with the aging population. Due to this, the elderly population suffering from orthopedic injuries requires post-acute care for proper recovery.

The post-acute care market, by age, is segmented into elderly, adults, and others. In 2022, the elderly segment held the largest share of the market. The adult segment is expected to grow at the fastest CAGR during 2022–2030. Patients aged 65 years and older tend to have more comorbid chronic diseases and disabilities. These individuals need age-appropriate management to reduce the risk of adverse events during hospitalization. According to the data published in the UptoDate Journal, older adults are more than twice as likely to need hospitalization as adults in middle age, with nearly 17% of Americans aged 65 and more hospitalized at least once a year, while only 8% of adults from the age group of 45–64 required hospitalization. The top diagnoses for admission among older patients include cardiovascular disease and sepsis. Although older patients have the same average length of stay. i.e., 5 days, as adults, they need more support after discharge, perhaps because of functional disability and medical complexity. Nearly 70% of adults of age 65 and above need post-acute care provided by skilled nursing facilities (SNF) or home health service providers, among others, at the time of discharge, compared to 23% of middle-aged (45–64 years old) adults who opt for post-acute care.
