Growing Prevalence of Chronic Diseases

According to our new research study on “MENAT Butterfly Needles Market Forecast to 2028 – COVID-19 Impact and Regional Analysis – by Application and End User,” the market is expected to grow from US$ 7,446.4 thousand in 2021 to US$ 12,073.4 thousand by 2028; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR 7.2% during 2022–2028. Growing prevalence of chronic diseases and rising cases of genetic blood disorders are driving the MENAT butterfly needles market.

According to a research article published in PLOS One in April 2020, in the Middle East, North Africa, and Turkey (MENAT) region, chronic diseases are most prevalent among those over 60, with 0.8% in the UAE and 10.6% in Turkey at risk. With continued improvements in life expectancy, these percentages are predicted to grow significantly by 2030 due to the demographic transition. As a result of this demographic effect, the population is highly susceptible to diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, autoimmune disorders, various types of cancer, and bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or von Willebrand disease, which are the leading causes of death and disability in the MENAT region. There is a growing prevalence of obesity in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Almost 25% of the MENA population suffers from hypertension. It is necessary to sample the blood of patients suffering from chronic diseases frequently.

According to the National Library of Medicine (NLM), in 2021, in Saudi Arabia, bleeding symptoms such as epistaxis (25%), menorrhagia (47%), easy bruising (18%), and prolonged bleeding from dental extractions (18%) have been reported among adults. The overall prevalence of bleeding disorders was 74.5%. The use of butterfly needles to draw blood in patients with bleeding disorders reduces excessive bleeding.

Diabetes is another life-threatening chronic disease with no functional cure. Diabetes of all types can lead to various complications in different body parts and increase the overall risk of premature death. Heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, leg amputation, vision loss, and nerve damage are the major complications associated with diabetes. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), in 2021, there were 73 million adults living with diabetes in the Middle East and North Africa region. The number is anticipated to increase to 95 million by 2030 and 136 million by 2045. Often, insulin is administered through butterfly needles, as they are smaller and thinner than an intravenous (IV) catheter and have smaller gauge sizes, ranging from 18 to 27 on average.

Thus, the growing prevalence of chronic diseases that require blood draws, long-term medications, and drug infusions is boosting the growth of MENAT Butterfly needles market.

Based on application, the MENAT Butterfly needles market is segmented into blood collection, IV rehydration, delivery of medications, venipuncture, and blood transfusion. In 2021, the blood collection segment held the largest share of the market. However, the market for the IV rehydration segment is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during 2022–2028. Hollow butterfly needles can be used to inject IV fluids to treat dehydration or prevent illness from impairing a person's ability to consume water or eat. The butterfly needles can also be used by a doctor to administer IV medications. IV medications such as painkillers and intravenous therapies such as chemotherapy or antibiotics can be injected into veins. With the rise in natality rates, increase in geriatric populations, and rise in the cancer prevalence in the MENAT region, the IV rehydration segment is growing, driving the butterfly needles market.

The hospital visits of patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases decreased as the cases of COVID-19 increased in this region. As the patients were afraid to visit hospitals, the number of surgeries for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases also decreased. Trauma, renal impairment, cancer, sickle cell anemia, hemorrhagic shock, and other medical diseases involving acute or chronic blood loss necessitate using blood and blood products such as cryoprecipitate, plasma, immune globulins, platelets, and other blood products. Some blood transfusion centers have missed their blood collection targets due to the COVID-19 outbreak. For example, the Zambia National Blood Transfusion Services set a goal of 18,750 units for the first quarter of 2020 but only managed to collect 6,516 units, or 34.7% of the total. The number of blood donation campaigns was also reduced due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the region. For instance, in 2020, the Association of Friends of the National Cancer Institute (AFNCI) organized 150 campaigns and collected 3,764 blood bags, whereas the number of campaigns in 2019 was 288, with 7,838 blood bags.

Prominent players operating in the MENAT butterfly needles market include B. Braun SE, Becton Dickinson and Co, Nipro Corp, Cardinal Health Inc, Medline Industries Inc, Terumo Corp, SB-Kawasumi Laboratories Inc, and ICU Medical Inc. Companies are launching new and innovative products and services to sustain their position in the butterfly needles market. In June 2020, Becton Dickinson Benelux N.V. launched BD Vacutainer UltraTouch Push Button Blood Collection Set with Pre-Attached Holder. A pre-attached holder prevents accidental needlestick injury due to the non-patient (tube-side) needle and helps ensure compliance with OSHA's single-use holder requirement.

MENAT Butterfly Needles Market Segmentation

Based on application, the MENAT butterfly needles market is segmented into blood collection, IV rehydration, delivery of medications, venipuncture, and blood transfusion. In terms of end user, the MENAT butterfly needles market is segmented into hospitals, clinics, blood banks, and others. Based on geography, the MENAT butterfly needles market is divided into Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, Qatar, and the Rest of MENAT.
